Left narrative
Netanyahu's coalition with Jewish supremacists threatens to dismantle Israel's independent judiciary, paving the way for West Bank annexation and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Right narrative
Despite three years of war since Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli society has proven resilient, rebuilding communities, welcoming immigrants and sustaining culture and enterprise. With all hostages finally returned, the nation enters elections with justified confidence rather than despair. Fierce debate over Gaza, religion and courts is healthy democracy, not collapse. Zionism itself endures as the legitimate defense of a Jewish homeland against those seeking its destruction. Israelis across political divides remain partners in one extraordinary, democratic and enduring national enterprise.
Narrative C
Israel's political divide is neither left nor right, but competing versions of Jewish nationalism. Beneath debates over security, territory and peace lies a deeper question: whose rights define the state? The 2026 Elections offer Israelis a choice between different forms of the same system, rather than a genuine decision between peace and war. As liberal nationalism gives way to religious-conservative politics, democracy's promise of equality faces an increasingly difficult test. This exposes the limits of electoral choice within Israel's democracy.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Israelis have never been all that divided regarding Palestinians. The socialists of the 1940s ethnically cleansed Palestinians from their land during the Nakba and put the Palestinians that remained under military rule. After the 1967 war, settlements in the newly occupied territories began immediately under left-wing governments. The shift to the right has only affected the political elite's rhetoric, as Israel's ultimate goal of destroying Palestinian society and building a Jewish supremacist state upon its ruins has continued unabated. Indeed, Israel has been an expansionist apartheid state from the very beginning.
