Did ICE agents shoot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in self-defense or execute an unjustified killing and cover it up?

The Spin

Republican narrative

ICE agents acted in self-defense when Lorenzo Salgado Araujo — an illegal alien — allegedly rammed a federal vehicle and tried to run over an officer during a lawful enforcement operation. The shooting is under investigation by the DHS Inspector General and Houston prosecutors, and demands for video are premature given an active probe. Calls to abolish ICE over a single contested incident ignore that federal agents have a right to protect themselves from deadly threats.

Democratic narrative

Surveillance footage does not show Araujo ramming any ICE vehicle, eyewitnesses in the van refute the government's account, and DHS has admitted agents targeted the wrong man entirely. The three witnesses to the shooting are now being pressured to self-deport before giving testimony, which looks like a deliberate effort to bury the truth. The Harris County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, and no body camera footage exists to back up ICE's version of events.
