Even with well-funded EU lobby groups pushing hard, 53% of Icelanders said no, proving that the country values self-determination over deeper European entanglement. This is democracy, so Iceland's referendum result deserves respect, but nearly half the country supported EU accession — this was no overwhelming rejection. The close vote reflects a genuinely divided nation, and concerns like fisheries could have been negotiated away at the table. Staying out doesn't mean stepping back from Europe; Iceland remains a NATO ally and EEA partner at a moment when regional cooperation matters most.
