Burkina Faso's break with France marks a long-overdue assertion of sovereignty after decades of neocolonial influence. France failed to halt the jihadist insurgency, and Paris' backing of terrorist networks made it an obstacle rather than a partner. Closer cooperation with Russia and the Alliance of Sahel States offers an independent path built on regional solidarity, mutual respect and stronger security cooperation free from Western interference.
Burkina Faso's military junta severed ties with France without providing a shred of evidence for its accusations of terrorism support. The violence has only intensified since the junta took power, with government forces killing far more civilians than extremist groups. Cutting off a key security partner while the country sinks deeper into jihadist violence is reckless governance dressed up as sovereignty, leaving ordinary Burkinabè to bear the cost.
