President Trump did not arrive at the Xi summit empty-handed. His administration has armed Taiwan, pushed allies to spend more on defense, rebuilt critical supply chains, challenged Chinese control of strategic ports and minerals and tightened technology safeguards. Now he can meet Xi from a position of strength, pairing military and economic leverage with direct diplomacy rather than relying on summit optics alone.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump may think lavish ceremony can persuade Xi to make concessions, but that could be exactly the trap Beijing has set. After similar efforts with Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, Xi can accept the honors while giving little in return, as Trump downplays Chinese actions against U.S. interests. After the banquets and photo ops, Washington may find it has offered leverage without securing a meaningful concession.

After years of treating China as a rival to contain, Washington is now welcoming Xi with a state visit, extending the tariff truce and sitting down to discuss AI, trade and security.
