Breaching 1.5C is now unavoidable, and the consequences are going to be catastrophic — worsening heat waves, glacier loss, rising seas and mass food insecurity are already locked in. The UN's own report makes clear that existing policies are nowhere near sufficient, and every fraction of a degree avoided still matters enormously. Urgent emissions cuts combined with carbon removal aren't optional; they're the only path to limiting how bad the overshoot gets.
Crossing 1.5C doesn't mean game over — it means the strategy has to change. The UN itself now says the goal is to overshoot, peak and decline, bringing temperatures back down through emissions cuts and carbon removal rather than treating the threshold as a hard cliff. Decades of harder weather and economic pain are ahead, but the science is clear that limiting peak warming and shortening the overshoot period still saves lives and reduces damage.
