University of Utah researchers have found that freshwater saturates sediments beneath the Great Salt Lake's hypersaline surface to depths of 3 to 4 kilometers (1.86 to 2.49 miles), or roughly 10,000 to 13,000 feet (3,048 to 3,962 meters), challenging prior assumptions about water behavior under terminal lakes.
