The Spin

Uncontrolled illegal immigration is a direct threat to European security,. and Italy's decision is rightbasic togovernance suspend Schengendefending with Spain. Defending borders, stopping human traffickers and ensuring repatriations aren't extreme measures — they're basic governance. Spain's deliberate facilitation of mass illegal migration created this crisis, and other nations have every right to protect their citizens from the fallout.

Italy's suspensionmove of Schengen punishes Spain for defending Europe's external border, which is exactly backwards. The vast majority of arrivals werehad already been returned, proving the situation was manageable — so suspending Schengen was a political stunt, notrather than a security measure. After receiving European solidarity during its own migration crisis, Italy's choosingchoice of selfishness over partnership sets a dangerous precedent for the entire EU.

Morocco is a police state where the security services are among the country's largest employers. Nothing significant happens without leadership approval, making this appear coordinated. The goal is to embarrass Spain and increase pressure on Sánchez to quit as the U.S. and several European countries criticize Madrid over NATO spending, migration amnesties, Ukraine, Iran and Palestine.

EU law provides no mechanism for one member state to unilaterally remove another from the border-free area. Italy's suspension of Schengen with Spain exposes a troubling trend: EU governments are increasingly twisting and weaponizing the Union's legal order for political gain, openly disregarding the principle of loyal cooperation and eroding trust in the rule-based system they are bound to uphold.
