Europe's extreme heat isn't just about carbon emissions — cleaner air from reduced sulfate pollution has removed a natural "sunshade," letting more solar energy reach the surface. The 1987 Montreal Protocol, while good for the ozone layer, inadvertently stalled the jet stream by shrinking the temperature gap between poles and equator, locking heat domes over the continent. Blaming CO2 alone misses the bigger picture that pollution cleanup itself accelerated European warming.

The science is clear that aerosol reductions explain Europe's accelerated warming, but greenhouse gases remain a foundational driver that can't be sidelined. The peer-reviewed research shows climate models consistently underestimate warming precisely because they undercount how aerosol-driven circulation changes amplify CO2's effects — these forces work together, not in opposition. Framing cleaner air as the main culprit dangerously lets fossil fuel emissions off the hook.
