The pro-Israel camp has exposed its true feelings towards Palestine supporters. As peaceful protesters remained in their tents, this mob launched fireworks, bricks, gas canisters, and pepper spray at them. While physically assaulting them, they yelled things such as "Second Nakba," referring to the 1948 displacement of the Palestinian people. The worst part is that campus security did nothing to intervene and police took hours to show up.
These universities should be held responsible, but not for what occurred last night. The recent wave of ignorant, immature, and violent anti-Israel protests is due largely thanks to administrators creating a campus protest culture filled with anti-semitic and anti-American ideologies. Those on the pro-Palestine side have a monopoly on violent civil unrest, not the other way around. The only way to end this callous movement is to remove its leaders from the faculty.
News headlines are ignoring the majority of students who are not involved and have diverse perspectives on the matter. Many pro-Israel and pro-Palestine students believe their peers should be allowed to protest peacefully, but they also agree that a line should be drawn at violent riots. The college experience should absolutely include political protest, but that can't hinder everyone else's ability to eat at the dining hall and walk to class.
