Will Israel Expand Its Ground Invasion to Rafah?

At around midnight Wednesday morning, pro-Israel counter-protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) attacked the pro-Palestine encampment with fireworks, wood, and metal barriers. Those inside the encampment countered with their own planks of wood and pepper spray.

At the request of the university, police arrived to the campus at around 1:50 a.m., where chants of "Back the blue" were heard from the pro-Israel side while "Free Palestine" was heard from the encampment. Police began to break up the metal and wood barricades by about 3:30 a.m.

Also on Tuesday night, NYC police (NYPD) arrested 119 protesters who had barricaded Columbia University's Hamilton Hall, as well as 173 protesters at City College of New York (CUNY). Police then cleaned up Columbia's encampment on the main lawn by 4 a.m. local time.

UCLA canceled Wednesday's classes and has maintained a "law enforcement presence... to help promote safety." Columbia, meanwhile, has asked police to remain on campus until May 17, with the department estimating that it will keep 15-20 officers on campus.

Just hours after Columbia's campus was cleaned up, pro-Palestine/anti-Israel protesters at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus set up their own "Gaza solidarity encampment," though classes have remained on schedule.

This comes as US Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) introduced a bill called the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which would require the Department of Education to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism.
