The Spin

Anti-Maduro narrative

Left-wing governments in Latin America stayed quiet about Venezuela's stolen votes for years. Now, some of them are finally saying the right thing, even if the sudden conversion reeks of convenience after the arrest of Nicolás Maduro. Better late than never — recognition should be earned at the ballot box, and the only legitimate way out of this mess is a real election.

Pro-Trump narrative

While Rodríguez isn't the legitimate president of Venezuela, democratic institutions in the country must first be restored after decades of authoritarianism before free and fair elections can be held. Washington has been exerting pressure on the Chavista regime to get things done in Venezuela, and Rodríguez is a tool for it.

Pro-Maduro narrative

Caracas has refused to be baited into a war against the U.S. that would have cost hundreds of thousands of lives in the smartest resistance available under the gun. The oil terms keep ownership and sovereignty in Venezuelan hands and blow past what neighbors settled for. Coercion was supposed to collapse the legitimate Bolivarian project, yet recognition and engagement have actually grown.
