The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Closing every consular post at once and offering no clear explanation looks far less like a security precaution than a deliberate attempt to spook voters into staying home on Election Day. Manufacturing a climate of fear days before ballots are cast is textbook election meddling, and the money flowing toward attacks on Brazil's courts fits the same pattern. Brazilian democracy belongs to Brazilians.

Government-critical narrative

Brazilians will head to the polls on Sunday in the most tense election in memory: embassies closing, a bomb scare outside the Supreme Court, and a government that answers with accusations instead of explanations. While Lula and his team cry foreign meddling, insiders admit that the government is presiding over an institutional crisis that will get even worse this year.
