The Spin

Pro-government narrative

The Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled unanimously in the U.K.'s favor and the tribunal's findings make clear Britain honored its termination obligations under the treaty's break clause. This legal outcome vindicates the U.K.'s position that no further financial liability existed once both parties reached an agreement in November 2024.

Government-critical narrative

The Rwanda deportation scheme was a costly failure that spent hundreds of millions in taxpayer money to send just four volunteers abroad. Scrapping the policy was the right call, and expanding safe routes would likely do more to reduce irregular migration than costly offshore processing schemes ever could.
