The Spin

Republican narrative

As criminal cartels have seized direct control over large swaths of Latin American territory and turned the drug trade into a national security crisis, the Western Hemisphere needs coordinated military action against them. The Americas Counter Cartel Coalition brings together several countries to dismantle these groups once and for all, as joint military operations are the only effective response to transnational criminal networks that previous approaches failed to stop.

Democratic narrative

Trump's counter cartel coalition is merely a political spectacle with little real impact as its all-military approach ignores what decades of evidence show: that military force against cartels alone doesn't translate into success and only produces death. Furthermore, the hypocrisy is staggering as Trump has recently pardoned Juan Orlando Hernández, a former Honduran president convicted of trafficking cocaine into the U.S.
