Canada walked away from a deal offering the world's best U.S. market access — steel and aluminum tariffs halved, major auto relief, softwood accommodations — and now wants to act surprised by the consequences. The U.S. runs a $60 billion deficit with Canada while Canadian barriers on American dairy, wine and autos go unchallenged. Doubling auto tariffs to 50% is the only rational response here, and worse consequences could follow if the arrogance and political gamesmanship don't stop.

Trump's latest tariff threat, though not surprising, is unjustified and will hurt the very American workers it claims to protect — especially in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Alabama, whose auto industries depend heavily on Canadian demand. With new export markets opening, foreign investment growing and a plan to diversify beyond the U.S., Canada can stand on its own two feet without accepting terms that undermine its sovereignty, and Trump's escalating pressure will only accelerate that shift.
