The Spin

Left narrative

Target's clown costume isn't just a PR blunder — it's proof the company still hasn't built the internal safeguards needed to catch harmful imagery before it hits shelves. A design evoking blackface and minstrelsy, modeled by a Black child in a pose straight out of Jim Crow-era caricatures, cleared every layer of review. Pulling it and apologizing is the bare minimum, but the real question is whether Target will actually fix the broken process that let this happen.

Right narrative

This so-called controversy is mostly manufactured outrage — the costume is a standard circus clown design and the uproar exists entirely due to left-leaning outrage. Target has become so entangled in culture war politics that every product decision gets filtered through an activist lens, making controversy unavoidable. At this point, no apology satisfies everyone, because the real issue isn't the costume, but that Target turned shopping into a political battleground.
