The Spin

Pro-government narrative

The Nigerian military dealt insurgents a crushing defeat at Mallam Fatori, killing around 80 militants — including three senior commanders — and seizing a large weapons cache. Acting on prior intelligence, troops carried out a coordinated offensive-defensive operation backed by air power, leaving the attackers in disarray. The elimination of key figures such as Malam Abdulrahman Gobara is expected to significantly disrupt insurgent command structures across the northeast.

Government-critical narrative

One military win does little to mask a deepening crisis — Nigeria’s terrorism deaths jumped 46% in 2025, and coordinated bombings in Maiduguri show militants striking hardened urban targets with alarming ease. Jihadist groups aren’t retreating; they are consolidating territory, deploying drones, and waiting out military offensives. Decades of pledges to "completely defeat" militants have repeatedly fallen short, and the broader pattern shows no clear sign of reversing anytime soon.
