The opacity surrounding Nigeria’s alleged coup case is a serious problem for democratic credibility. Months of delayed disclosures, media trials and ethnic narratives have deepened public distrust rather than building confidence in the process. Military officers should face civilian courts under the Federal High Court’s constitutional jurisdiction — not closed-door tribunals — so Nigerians can actually see and trust how justice is carried out.
This was a real, elaborate plot to storm the Presidential Villa, capture President Tinubu and eliminate top officials — and the charges prove it. A retired major general, active-duty officers, a Presidential Villa electrician and even a Nollywood actor were all allegedly recruited for the operation. Nigeria reshuffled its military leadership and brought formal treason charges precisely because the threat to democratic stability was undeniable.
