The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Mali's military government's move to pursue Iyad Ag Ghaly signals a renewed effort to dismantle this ongoing terrorist threat, with Malian forces having neutralized hundreds of militants since the April 25 attacks. The campaign reflects the government's determination to halt further jihadist advances.

Government-critical narrative

This announcement does little to mask the reality that Mali's junta is losing ground. After dissolving political parties and expelling Western allies, the junta handed security to Russian mercenaries, creating a dangerous intelligence vacuum. Mali is edging toward becoming an al-Qaeda-governed state, with implications reaching far beyond the Sahel.
