Ukraine is running an energy blockade against Hungary by refusing to repair the Druzhba pipeline, leaving a NATO ally without Russian oil for nearly two months. Budapest has every right to halt gas exports in response — Hungary can't keep supplying 45% of Ukraine's gas imports while Kyiv attacks the TurkStream pipeline and stonewalls pipeline repairs. Protecting Hungarian families and energy security has to come first.
Cutting off gas to Ukraine is pure election-season theater from Orbán, not a legitimate energy security move. Ukraine has already said it can source gas elsewhere, and the only real loser is Hungary — forfeiting over a billion dollars in revenue. The Druzhba pipeline was damaged by Russian strikes, and blaming Ukraine for the fallout while blocking a $104 billion EU loan is cynical political manipulation.
