U.S. repeated attempts to interfere in Colombia's internal affairs reflect a deliberate imperial and hegemonic strategy. Washington has no authority to dictate what foreign governments in the Western Hemisphere should do or should not do. Instead of alignment or submission, Bogotá must meet this offensive with a foreign policy built on sovereignty and mutual respect.
Performative sovereignty rhetoric is no substitute for the pragmatic reality of interdependence. Despite recent tensions, the U.S. remains Colombia's largest trading partner, security ally and source of foreign investment. Both countries stand to lose from a rupture. Whatever government takes office in August must assert Colombia's dignity without sacrificing the bilateral cooperation that underpins its stability.
