Standing up to lopsided trade finally paid off, and Europe's factories and workers are better for it. A bloc that negotiates as one can force real market access and secure the critical materials industry depends on, instead of begging for scraps. That's the kind of muscle citizens expect from Brussels.
A cut measured against inflated forecasts isn't really a cut, since shipments keep climbing, just a bit slower. Chasing a trade deficit as if it were an injury misses the point, since cheap imports hold down inflation and feed European manufacturing. Vague pledges worth a few billion do nothing about the real competitive pressure on domestic industry.
