Canada's dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs are a necessary and proportional defense against unjustified U.S. aggression in trade from President Trump. Walking away from a bad deal — one that asked too much and offered too little — was the right call to protect Canadian workers, farmers and families. The $7.5 billion support package on top of nearly $25 billion already deployed shows Canada is serious about building a stronger, more resilient economy.
Canada has spent decades protecting its industries while restricting American goods, including nearly 300% tariffs on U.S. dairy and auto quotas that helped drive U.S. vehicle exports down 22%. Its new 50% steel and aluminum tariffs only show it's choosing retaliation over rebalancing a historically uneven trade relationship. With three-quarters of its goods exports going to the U.S., however, President Trump will ultimately have the leverage to end Canada's free ride.
Canada's retaliatory tariffs are a pea shooter in a gun battle. It's a politically performative move that will raise prices and reduce choices for Canadian consumers without meaningfully pressuring the U.S. Canada's economy is one-twelfth the size of America's, and walking away from negotiations just hands leverage back to Washington. Matching tariffs dollar for dollar sounds tough, but it's Canadian families who end up footing the bill.
