Burkina Faso Opens First Gold Refinery

Is Burkina Faso's new gold refinery real economic independence or just a prop in a propaganda operation?

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Owning the whole gold chain is what economic independence looks like for a nation that watched foreign multinationals haul away its wealth for decades. Refining at home means keeping more value in the country, with revenue for roads, industry and local jobs instead of profits shipped overseas. Lectures about democracy from powers that spent decades backing friendly dictatorships while exploiting Burkina Faso's resources ring pretty hollow.

Government-critical narrative

The shiny new refinery is a prop in a propaganda operation, not proof of real progress or economic independence. Swapping Paris for Moscow isn't sovereignty when the payment for mercenaries, weapons and political support comes straight out of the ground in gold. Deepfakes and viral hero worship can't hide a regime where jihadists overrun military bases, civilians die in record numbers and independent journalists are increasingly silenced.
