The Spin

Narrative A

Alberta's push for separation is a dangerous gamble that mirrors Brexit's cautionary tale — voters thought they were sending a message but ended up with consequences they never intended. About 30% support in the province is nowhere near a mandate to blow up the federation, especially during a trade war with the U.S. This movement is being driven by emotional, nationalistic arguments, not sound policy thinking.

Narrative B

The Carney-Smith pipeline deal excluded B.C. and Indigenous Peoples entirely, turning Alberta into a quasi-sovereign negotiating partner while sidelining everyone else. That's not how a federation works. The Assembly of First Nations unanimously called for the MOU to be scrapped, and the federal government may face legal jeopardy over its failure to consult. Ottawa's approach has deepened divisions and Albertans deserve the opportunity the determine their own governance.
