The continued accessibility of firearms to dangerous extremists remains the core issue driving these tragic events. The shooter made several intimations of suicidal thoughts in their writings and videos, a serious red flag that should have been caught. While it may be tempting to leverage the rantings of a disturbed individual for political gain, the more difficult but crucial task is confronting the hard reality of guns and their role in these tragedies.

Blaming lawful gun ownership for the actions of a deeply disturbed individual misses the real issue: the hateful ideologies that foment on the fringes, particularly those rooted in anti-religious and antisemitic hate, that threaten religious freedom. While the full motive behind this tragedy is still unclear, it is clear that this attack targeted Catholics. Now is the time to stand in solidarity with the Catholic community, not to engage in partisan games.
