The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Doug Ford’s advert was an outrageous provocation that fraudulently misrepresented the views of former President Ronald Reagan to attack the current administration. Undoubtedly, the purpose of this advert was to influence the Supreme Court's decision-making. Raising punitive tariffs on Canada, therefore, was necessary to counter Ontario’s foreign influence campaign.

Anti-Trump narrative

President Trump's reaction to Premier Doug Ford's advertisement — which merely aimed to highlight the negatives of protectionism — is overblown in the extreme. In matters of such critical importance as international trade, cool heads must prevail. Canada remains open to negotiations with the U.S. to find an arrangement that benefits both parties.
