Four straight years of record-low Antarctic winter ice is a pattern, not a fluke, and the ocean warming behind it is already here. Less ice means a darker Southern Ocean soaking up more heat, weakened ice shelves and the glaciers they hold back sliding faster toward the sea. Krill, algae and emperor penguins lose the platform their whole food web depends on.

Decades of doomsday deadlines have come and gone, from the ice-free Arctic summers that never arrived to the glaciers that stubbornly refused to vanish on schedule. Arctic extent at the end of September has actually climbed over the past twenty years, which is the opposite of collapse. When the same celebrity prophets keep missing, skepticism is the honest response.
