Copenhaver was struck in the arm and abdomen, injuries that required multiple surgeries, including a transection of his colon, and left him with nerve damage. A bullet remained lodged in his body near his spine, and he walked with a cane.

In June, Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, sued the federal government, alleging the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security at the rally. The case remains ongoing.

Mourning the dead means nothing without answers, and the public still cannot see what really happened in Butler. The FBI dripping out records at a pace that would take more than a decade to finish looks like stonewalling. Families of the wounded and the dead deserve the full truth now, while it still matters.
