Trump Bans Canadian Alcohol, Motorcycle Imports

Trump Bans Canadian Alcohol, Motorcycle Imports

Is this economic warfare or the only credible answer to Canada's discrimination against U.S. goods?

The Spin

This is economic warfare. The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement flatly bars total import bans, and no national security fig leaf covers whiskey and cheese, so this shreds a treaty the U.S. signed and leaves shortages and higher prices on American shelves. Blockades exist to force capitulation, and Canada's sovereignty is the real target here.

Canadian provinces yanked American liquor off their shelves while leaving every other country's bottles alone, and that is textbook discrimination against U.S. commerce. Washington offered a suspension, Canada reneged and Saskatchewan piled on a 50% levy, so an import ban is the only credible answer left.
