The Spin

European governments and EU institutions are drifting dangerously from their own democratic traditions, using vague hate-speech laws and supranational overreach to silence dissent and concentrate power in unaccountable technocratic bodies. Consequently, U.S. funding for civil society groups defending Western civilizational values is vital to safeguarding both human rights and American interests on the continent.

The Trump administration's meddling in European politics, whether it be batting for Orbán, pressuring Romania or backing far-right parties, poses a serious threat to the continent's sovereignty. Luckily, however, it has backfired spectacularly. Instead of sowing division, it has fostered the very European consolidation and strategic autonomy Washington sought to prevent, defending democracy in the process.
