The Spin

European governments and EU institutions are drifting dangerously from their own democratic traditions, using vague hate-speech laws and supranational overreach to silence dissent and concentrate power in unaccountable technocratic bodies. U.S. funding for civil society groups defending free speech, national sovereignty and Western civilizational values is exactly the kind of principled engagement that strengthens — not undermines — genuine democratic self-government. Transparent, rules-based grants supporting pluralism and free expression are a legitimate and necessary counterweight to creeping bureaucratic authoritarianism across the continent.

U.S. meddling in European elections — stumping for Orbán, pressuring Romania, backing far-right parties — has backfired spectacularly, producing exactly the European consolidation and strategic autonomy Washington sought to prevent. Dressing up partisan interference as defending "civilizational values" fools nobody; Hungary's voters just handed Orbán a historic defeat despite full-throated American backing. The Trump administration has managed to unite European electorates against U.S. influence while accelerating the very EU cohesion it wanted to fragment.
