U.S. funding for civil society groups defending free speech, national sovereignty and Western civilizational values is exactly the kind of principled engagement that strengthens — not undermines — genuine democratic self-government. Transparent, rules-based grants supporting pluralism and free expression are a legitimate and necessary counterweight to creeping bureaucratic authoritarianism across the continent.
