Spain's government has completely failed Ceuta's residents, letting thousands of illegal migrants overwhelm a city of just 80,000 people while crime surges and hospitals collapse. Madrid moved too slowly, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's damaged relationship with Morocco almost certainly made the crisis worse. Europe needs serious border enforcement, not bureaucratic hand-wringing, to protect citizens who deserve the services their taxes fund.
Ceuta's crisis is being cynically exploited to stoke xenophobia while the real story goes untold — these are people fleeing jihadist violence, forced labor and famine, not an invasion force. Spain's agricultural economy literally depends on migrant labor, and harsh deportation politics harm national economies as much as the migrants themselves. A government apology and faster legal processing show accountability, not failure.
