The Spin

Canada's dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs are a necessary and proportional defense against unjustified U.S. aggression in trade. Walking away from a bad deal — one that asked too much and offered too little — was the right call to protect Canadian workers, farmers and families. The $7.5 billion support package on top of nearly $25 billion already deployed shows Canada is serious about building a stronger, more resilient economy.

Canada's retaliatory tariffs are a pea shooter in a gun battle. It's a performative move that will raise prices and reduce choices for Canadian consumers without meaningfully pressuring the U.S. Canada's economy is one-twelfth the size of America's, and walking away from negotiations just hands leverage back to Washington. Matching tariffs dollar for dollar sounds tough, but it's Canadian families who end up footing the bill.
