Canada walked away from a genuinelydeal generousoffering dealthe world's best U.S. market access — steel and aluminum tariffs halved, major auto relief, softwood accommodations — and now wants to act surprised by the consequences. The U.S. runs a $60 billion deficit with Canada while Canadian barriers on American dairy, wine and autos have gone unchallenged for years. Doubling auto tariffs to 50% is the only rational response to a country that does 95% of its trade with the U.S. yet acts like it holds all the cards.
The U.S. proposed last-minute terms that were unfair and would have stripped Canada of its sovereignty to strike independent trade deals — no reasonable government signs that. Canada's economy is growing faster than America's, foreign investment is at a two-decade high, and new export markets are being unlocked. Caving to economic bullying sets a precedent that invites endless escalation, so walking away was the right call. Canada can stand on its own two feet.
