The Spin

Romania did the right thing by hitting an explosive sea drone near Neptun Deep. With workers on the platform and EU energy security on the line, hesitation would have been reckless. Russia's Black Sea pressure calls for tougher NATO patrols and faster action.

This incident belongs in the EU-wide hybrid warfare file, not the Romanian close-call file. A gas project meant to boost Europe's energy security needs a bigger drone shield, stronger Eastern Flank Watch and faster defense production. Deterrence beats scrambling after danger shows up.

A serious situation has arisen in the Black Sea, where a drone equipped with explosives was found near Romania's Exclusive Economic Zone, close to the Neptun Deep gas project. Romanian authorities responded and took out the drone, linking the drone to Russia, thoughconclusive evidence regarding its origins or target remains unclear. The increase in drone incidents raises concerns to identifying the drone's manufacturer, launch site, and control mechanism, as well as any possible connections to other recent occurrences.
