The Spin

Brazil's deep-sea oil discovery in the Equatorial Margin is a win for energy sovereignty and economic development, bringing jobs, tech investment and funding for a sustainable energy transition. Petrobras has the engineering capacity to do this responsibly, and the revenues will go toward education and improving lives. Abandoning this opportunity while neighbors like Guyana strike it rich would be a serious mistake.

Drilling near the Amazon estuary is reckless — the currents are so complex that containing a spill would be nearly impossible, and this region was off-limits even under Bolsonaro. Approving this license right before hosting COP30 exposes the energy transition argument as hollow, since revenues from decades of new extraction cannot seriously double as climate funding. Indigenous communities and irreplaceable ecosystems are being sacrificed for oil profits.
