Brazil orders Discord to suspend livestreams after teen’s death

The Spin

A 13-year-old girl was pushed into self-harm and suicide live on Discord, and the platform simply did not have the safeguards to catch it in real time. Brazil's data agency found robust evidence of failure, so pulling the plug on livestreaming until real protections exist is the only responsible move. Kids deserve better than relying on user reports after the damage is already done.

Banning livestreaming does nothing but hand government more control over digital platforms while criminals just hop to another app. Discord already yanked the private server involved and is cooperating with police, so calling the suspension anything but premature ignores the facts. Text chat and voice channels stay open anyway, proving this is more about optics than actual child safety.
