The Spin

Canada has been deliberately targeting American producers with discriminatory trade practices — banning U.S. alcohol from provincial shelves, capping U.S. auto imports and giving European dairy better market access than American farmers get. These aren't neutral policies; they're calculated moves to punish American industry while protecting Canadian interests. The 50% tariffs are a direct and justified response to force Canada back to the table on fair terms.

These 50% tariffs lean on Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 — a Depression-era law that's never actually been used to impose tariffs and that trade lawyers say will face immediate legal challenges. The Supreme Court already struck down the IEEPA tariff regime, and now the administration is digging through century-old statutes to get around that ruling. Americans will pay higher prices on cement, wine and everyday goods while USMCA negotiations get torched in the process.
