The Spin

The Supreme Court's ruling forced the U.S. to hand back $81 billion in collected tariff revenue, and that's a massive financial hit with no guarantee of any benefit to everyday Americans. Companies were fast to raise prices when tariffs kicked in, but don't expect those same companies to lower prices now that refunds are flowing. The government lost a huge pile of money it had already secured, and consumers will likely see none of it.

The Trump administration illegally collected $166 billion in IEEPA tariffs, and more than four months after the Supreme Court struck them down, over half the money still hasn't been repaid. Smaller importers face enormous bureaucratic hurdles getting refunds while large firms like Walmart and Ford move to the front of the line. The administration is actively fighting to keep some of the unlawfully seized funds, which is a serious injustice to American businesses.
