Espinoza, Iturriaga and Zara were also among those sentenced in 2010 for the 1974 killing of former army commander-in-chief Carlos Prats and his wife in Buenos Aires. While the first two have long been held at Punta Peuco, Zara had gone free last year after serving his sentence.

DINA chief Manuel Contreras was sentenced in 1993 for his role in the D.C. bomb attack, and U.S. citizen Michael Townley was extradited in 1978 to the U.S. where he confessed to his role in the murders. In 2012, an appeals court in Santiago ordered the reopening of the investigation.
