The Spin

Pulling 4,000 troops from Poland while Russia still threatens NATO's eastern flank is reckless and sends exactly the wrong signal to Vladimir Putin. Pentagon staff were blindsided by the decision, Congress wasn't notified, and soldiers were already en route when the order dropped. Punishing a model ally like Poland — which leads NATO in defense spending — over frustrations with Germany makes zero strategic sense.

The canceled Poland deployment is part of a deliberate, multilayered Pentagon review — not a reckless retreat. Polish defense officials themselves said the decision concerns Germany, not Poland, and NATO confirmed it doesn't affect deterrence plans on the eastern flank. Europe has long relied on American troops as a crutch, and pushing allies to build real defense capacity is long overdue.
