At Least 23 Chadian Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Attack

Is the Lake Chad crisis a persistent insurgency demanding global support or a territorial power struggle between militant groups?

The Spin

Boko Haram’s attack on Barka Tolorom island shows this insurgency is far from finished — 23 Chadian soldiers were killed and 26 wounded as militants exploit Lake Chad’s marshes and islands to strike at will. The terrain gives them a persistent tactical edge that even sustained offensives have struggled to neutralize. Chad’s forces are carrying the burden on the front line and deserve stronger regional coordination and international backing to decisively dismantle this threat.

The Lake Chad crisis isn’t just Boko Haram hitting soldiers — it’s a full-blown territorial war with ISWAP over trade routes, smuggling networks and taxing civilians, while states bordering the lake have effectively lost control of the islands. Residents are fleeing, hundreds are dead and both groups are advancing in capability — with ISWAP now deploying drones and AI. Without a sustained military presence, whoever wins this rivalry will effectively control the region.

Metaculus Prediction

There's a 39% chance that Chad will experience a successful coup d'etat before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
