The Spin

Peru's right wing just pulled off a massive win — voters are done with leftist politics and put two conservative candidates at the top. Fujimori and López Aliaga heading to a runoff proves the country has shifted decisively away from communism. This is a historic rejection of the left, plain and simple.

Calling this a right-wing sweep is way premature — rural votes are still being counted and Roberto Sánchez is leading in five key regions including Puno, Ayacucho and Cajamarca. The IPSOS flash electoral shows a razor-thin race with multiple candidates clustered within a few points. The runoff picture is far from settled.
