These elections unfold under a consolidated corrupt pact anchored by Fujimori and López Aliaga, whose parties have systematically captured congressional majorities to shield allies from accountability. Given that fragmentation actually masks entrenched insider networks, it's a matter of fact that the country's next president will be an insider — let's hope that Peruvian citizens at least reject those from the corrupt governing pact.
Peru's path to development was derailed by a decade of leftist obstruction, bureaucratic expansion and anti-investment narratives that drove poverty from 20% to 27%. In this presidential election, the only rational response is consolidating center-right votes. Carlos Álvarez and other trailing candidates must step aside and endorse López Aliaga and/or Keiko Fujimori to ensure that no socialist advances to the runoff.
