Saving lives must come first, but that means dismantling the criminal networks driving this crisis, not looking away.
Deaths are surging even as Mediterranean arrivals are actually falling — Italy recorded about 6,200 arrivals in 2026, down from 9,400 the same period in 2025. That means the boats attempting the crossing are more dangerous and overcrowded than ever, driven by smugglers profiting off desperation. Stronger border coordination and expanded legal pathways are the only real fix to stop traffickers from sending people to their deaths.
