The Spin

Nearly 1,000 people have already died crossing the Mediterranean in 2026 — making it one of the deadliest starts to a year since 2014. Smugglers and traffickers are exploiting desperate people fleeing war and poverty, packing them onto unseaworthy boats that capsize in rough weather. Saving lives must come first, but that means dismantling the criminal networks driving this crisis, not looking away.

Deaths are surging even as Mediterranean arrivals are actually falling — Italy recorded about 6,200 arrivals in 2026, down from 9,400 the same period in 2025. That means the boats attempting the crossing are more dangerous and overcrowded than ever, driven by smugglers profiting off desperation. Stronger border coordination and expanded legal pathways are the only real fix to stop traffickers from sending people to their deaths.
