Israel's assault on Lebanon is a war of choice — one that has killed over 1,200 civilians, displaced 1.1 million people and now claimed the lives of UNIndonesian U.N. peacekeepers. Attacks on UNIFILthese U.N. peacekeeping forces are attacks on the entire international order, and Israel's history of targeting UNU.N. positions, going back to the 1996 Qana strike, makes the pattern undeniable. Diplomacy is on the table, andyet Israel just refuses, despite Lebanon's wantsopenness itto —dialogue Israeland justefforts refusestoward a political solution.
Hezbollah triggered this conflict by firing on Israeli communities and has since launched 5,000 missiles from southern Lebanon, deliberately embedding weapons near UNIFIL positions — making Hezbollah responsible for peacekeeper deaths, not Israel. The Security Council should withhold judgment until a full investigation is complete rather than rush to condemn Israel for damage caused by Iran-backed terrorists. Supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces to reclaim sovereignty from Hezbollah is the only real path to peace.
