Natural England programme manager Neil Constable said the £28 million scheme faced "curveballs" including nature conservation rulings, the COVID-19 pandemic and rising material costs. The path was renamed in 2023 to honor King Charles following his coronation and his support for the natural world.

The trail includes a "roll-back" provision, allowing sections to be moved inland if coastal erosion or landslips affect the route. A landslip near Charmouth, Dorset in early 2025 prompted a 15-metre rollback that was completed within weeks.
