Sri Lanka's cabinet made the right call shifting to a four-day government workweek to conserve fuel amid Middle East conflict disruptions. Closing offices every Wednesday is a smart, practical move that stretches limited reserves without gutting essential services. This is responsible governance — protecting the economy before a crisis hits, not after.

A four-day workweek sounds good on paper, but Sri Lanka's public sector isn't ready — inefficiency, poor digital infrastructure and unskilled workers already cause massive delays in a five-day week. Cutting a day without fixing the underlying dysfunction just compresses the same problems into less time. Real reform means better training and transport, not a shorter calendar.
